A silly account of one girl and her pals getting back in shape

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" - Philipians 4:13

I invite you to join me in the adventure of making healthy choices. I don't care where you are in this walk. You can do it! Really you can. I hope my blog will encourage you along the way. I'm not an extremist. I am not going to have you on an all organic diet. I'm not even anti-ho ho. I'm anti-eating-a-whole-box-of-ho hos-at one setting. I'm not going to encourage you to run a marathon, unless, of course, you want to run one. Then I will cheer for you and loudly. I'm just a normal girl working to love and take care of my God-given body. I will pray for you effortlessly, because that's how easy it is. For now, I am praying you and all readers will be blessed along the way!

Get moving at your Recreation Center

It's time to get moving again no matter the weather. Get to it and go for a walk or a run at an indoor facility to get through the winter months! The winter months . . . ah, that's if you live up north . . . perhaps you can do the same in the summer months if you are a southerner for you should be outside walking and running this time of year if you're a southerner!

We live in a college town and the college is doing a Biggest Loser Event. With that they're offering free classes to anyone interested both college student and townie. They offer zumba and step-aerobics. The funny part is they're offered at college student times (late night mostly), but it's worth it. If you've never gotten your groove on at a zumba class I highly encourage you to try it out. Fun! While I can't wiggle like the college students, I am getting in shape. How you ask? When I can't get the moves down I simply jump around all spastic (picture Goldie Hawn in the movie House Sitter doing her aerobics) and make sure I'm sweating until I catch on again. If I just dated myself with that Goldie Hawn comment than you're probably a college student, so go back to bed, you're up too early. At any rate at zumba my stomach muscles are surely getting toned for I laugh at myself a lot. Which reminds me . . . take a friend to class . . . you'll laugh even more.

Also as part of this Biggest Loser the college has pointed out that the community has access to their inside field house (dome over the football field.) Last night I made my way there and had a most excellent 2 mile run and 1 mile walk. Nice. It's close enough for me to walk . . . bonus, as the fresh air, even though as a winter wimp I looked like a fool all bundled up, was good. Still slightly aware of it when I look silly, as I left the house, I insecurely said to our 17 year old, Josh, "I know I look like a fool, but it's cold and I can't help it." He looked back mockingly and said, "Yes, you can." Enough said. Still the fresh air that got through my scarf around my face was good. And the Dome itself is a happy family place where kids can play in the center with their soccer ball, etc. (supervised by you, of course). My other thought while there was you should just take your kids with you to get them out so they can run around so they get to bed early and you can get more reading in. Oh wait, I made that personal. But seriously, a great new place to workout in my world.

If you don't live in a college town or live in a college town that isn't so friendly with their facilities, check for similar programs in your own community. I found in St. Petersburg Florida the recreation centers had great programs at the time for $6 dollars a class. Even I was willing to pay that. Or google zumba and look for a local class, they are often inexpensive . . . I assure you, once you've zumba'd you'll never go back.

So get out there, check out your community for the freebies or the cheapies and get moving . . . not tomorrow . . . do it today!
